Uses
Risperdal (Risperidone) is prescribed to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. It is a widely held belief in the medical community that schizophrenia is associated with excessive dopamine activity in the brain. This drug is an atypical antipsychotic, and it works by affecting dopamine and serotonin, thereby helping to prevent abnormal brain activity. Hallucinations, emotional problems, aggression and other symptoms of schizophrenia may be relieved as a result of this. Bipolar disorder may also be treated, and certain patients with autism may be prescribed this drug.
Dosage and Administration
Patients will require a thorough medical assessment before Risperdal (Risperidone) can be prescribed. This drug comes in the form of tablets, containing 4mg of the active ingredient. In the majority of cases, adults undergoing treatment for schizophrenia will be instructed to take an initial dose of 1mg, taken twice per day. This may be titrated, and the prescribing doctor may adjust the dosage upwards, in increments of 1mg twice per day. Normally, this will be done on the second or third day of treatment. Any subsequent adjustments will be done at intervals of 1 week. The maximum dosage is 16mg per day. Dosage regimens for bipolar disorder or other conditions will normally vary. Always follow your doctor's instructions.
Side effects
Patients who have been prescribed Risperdal (Risperidone) should note that just like other drugs, side effects may occur during the course of treatment. A list of examples is provided here:
If you are concerned about any side effects which occur, you should consult your doctor. Medical help should be sought straight away if any symptoms of a severe reaction are noticed, such as uncontrolled bodily movements, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, a painful penis erection lasting for hours, white sores around the mouth, seizures or any other reactions which have not been mentioned here.
Precautions
This drug is not recommended for use in older adults with dementia. This is because there is an increase in the risk of serious side effects when used to treat older patients affected by dementia.
Antipsychotic medicines may increase the risk of blood clots. You are advised to discuss all the possible risks of treatment with your doctor before you start treatment.
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
Always use Risperdal (Risperidone) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:
