Uses
Risperdal (Risperidone) is a second generation atypical antipsychotic medicine indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia. It is also used for manic and mixed episodes in patients with bipolar disorder. Although all details related to its mechanism of action are not fully understood, medical research has suggested that its therapeutic benefits in the treatment of schizophrenia may be achieved by the combined antagonism of the dopamine and serotonin (5HT2) receptors.
The delusions and hallucinations that occur in patients with schizophrenia are believed to be related to a disturbance in dopamine activity. By acting as an antagonist of the dopamine receptors in the brain, this medicine can provide adequate control over both the positive symptoms (hallucinations and hostility towards others) as well as the negative symptoms (social withdrawal). Other symptoms of schizophrenia, such as anxiety may also be relieved. In some cases, doctors may use this medicine to treat patients for conditions not listed here.
Dosage and Administration
Risperdal (Risperidone) comes in tablet form, and each one contains 1mg of the active ingredient. The required dosage can often differ and will need to be individualised by the doctor providing medical treatment. Doctors may direct patients treating schizophrenia to begin treatment by taking 1mg twice per day. However, following this, it may be increased on the second and third day on the advice of the doctor. Further increases may also be ordered by the doctor at intervals of 1 week, however the maximum dosage is 16mg per day. Do not change your dosage unless following your doctor's instructions.
