Main Use Active Ingredient Marketed Name
Schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and irritability caused by autism Risperidone Respidon

Uses
Respidon (Risperidone) treats schizophrenia symptoms, and it is believed to work by affecting the dopamine and serotonin receptors. The active component in this medicine is referred to by medical experts as an atypical antipsychotic. Although doctors are not fully sure of its exact mechanism of action in the treatment and control of schizophrenia symptoms, it has been hypothesized that its benefits may be related to the antagonism of the dopamine (D2) and serotonin (5HT2) receptors.

Medical studies have showed that it can reduce 5-HT cell firing. It also affects the H1 histaminergic (and various other) receptors. The behavioural disturbances and emotional problems commonly exhibited in schizophrenic patients are thought to be related to dopamine activity. By reducing the activity of the neurotransmitters (especially dopamine) that play a key role in the transmission of messages throughout the brain, it may bring about relief in schizophrenia. Other indications include treating certain problems caused by bipolar disorder and irritability occurring as a result of autism.

Dosage and Administration
Respidon (Risperidone) is provided in tablet form, and the medicine content of each one is 2mg. Adults affected by schizophrenia will have their condition assessed and the symptoms analyzed by a doctor, so that the correct and appropriate dosage can be determined. In some cases, patients beginning treatment may be directed by their doctor to take 1mg, twice per day. This may be titrated by the doctor over a set period of time. However, it is of vital importance that patients do not adjust their dosage or make any changes to the dosage schedule unless under instruction of their doctor to do so.

Side effects
Aside from its intended effects, Respidon (Risperidone) can also cause side effects, such as:

  • Salivation
  • Weight gain
  • Discharge of breast milk
  • Sleepy or drowsy feeling
  • Dermatological dryness or discolouration

All side effects (even those considered to be mild) must be reported to the doctor providing treatment. Serious reactions which will require immediate medical care include behavioural changes and aggression, difficulty walking properly, uncontrolled shaking and body movements, fever, a prolonged erection which will not go away and others which have not been mentioned here.

Precautions
Patients will generally be ordered by their doctor to avoid drinking alcohol during treatment, as it could increase drowsiness or cause other unwanted side effects.

Treatment with this medicine could affect the body's ability to cool down after becoming hot, and it may also make it more difficult to heat up in cold temperatures. Inform your doctor if you will be undergoing exercise or exposed to hot or cold weather.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Respidon (Risperidone) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
