Uses
Differin Cream (Adapalene) for acne is used topically, and it can help to cleanse and unblock the pores, while also decreasing the amount of acne pimples and spots formed. Some patients have used it for keratosis pilaris. Its active ingredient is a type of retinoid (vitamin A derivitave) that acts on the skin and decreases the growth rate of certain skin cells. These cells are called keratin surface cells, and can cause a blockage of the sebaceous glands, resulting in excess amounts of skin oils being accumulated.
Certain bacteria can then feed on these oils, and these bacteria can then cause inflammation of the sebaceous glands, which results in acne. Removing the blockage from the pores allows the oils to escape, which decreases the amount of spots and comedones (blackheads) formed on the skin. An added benefit is that it can help with the exfoliation of the outer skin, which is also beneficial in the treatment of acne.
Dosage and Administration
Differin Cream (Adapalene) is used topically. Your doctor will provide you with instructions on proper use. Adults are sometimes directed to apply the cream to the face (and any skin affected by acne) once per day in the evening. A thin layer is all that is required. Doctors generally recommend washing the skin that is to be treated with a mild soap prior to applying the acne cream, and in some cases, they may also be advised to apply moisturizing products if their skin is dry. In most cases, if no improvement occurs after the cream has been used for 12 weeks, treatment may need to be discontinued.
