Uses
Adapen Gel (Adapalene) is a topical treatment for acne. Its active ingredient is a retinoid, which is a type of chemical compound similar to vitamin A that aids the skin's renewal process. This product has two main modes of action. It unblocks the pores and glands by decreasing the growth of the cells that block them, thereby reducing the amount of blackheads and spots formed. It can also affect the growth of skin cells, which helps to exfoliate the outer skin. Some patients may use this product to treat other skin conditions.
Dosage and Administration
Ask your doctor how often you need to apply Adapen Gel (Adapalene) to your skin. You will also be told how long treatment is required for. Never apply more than the prescribed amount to your skin, as this could be harmful. It is necessary to wash both your face and hands before applying the gel, and you are also advised to gently dry the face with a delicate and clean towel. The prescribed amount of gel may then be applied to the face. In some cases, the acne may worsen during the initial weeks of treatment. However, with continued use, the majority of patients will notice an improvement. It generally takes 8 to 12 weeks of treatment for the full benefits of treatment with this gel to be noticed.
Side effects
Side effects may be noticeable when using Adapen Gel (Adapalene), and are most commonly reported during the first 2 to 4 weeks of treatment. Examples include:
Remember that a worsening of acne symptoms during the first 2 to 4 weeks is common, and should eventually decrease. Tell your doctor if any reactions are bothersome. If you notice severe skin irritation, intense burning or swelling of the skin, see your doctor immediately.
