Uses
Flucloxacillin (Flucloxacillin) is a penicillin antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections in the body. Skin infections (such as impetigo, cellulitis and infected wounds), respiratory tract infections, osteomyelitis (a bacterial bone infection), enteritis, otitis externa (ear infection) and pneumonia are just some examples of the many infections that can be treated with this medicine.
The active ingredient in this drug is slightly different from other penicillin antibiotics. It is unaffected by the enzyme produced by penicillin resistant bacteria (called penicillinase) that normally destroys the penicillin. This makes it effective at treating infections which are resistant to other types of penicillin antibiotics.
Dosage and Administration
Flucloxacillin (Flucloxacillin) comes as 250mg capsules, which are taken by mouth. The correct dosage can vary from patient to patient, and depends on the condition being treated. Adult patients are generally directed to take 250mg, 4 times per day. However, this is just an example, and all patients are required to visit their doctor in order to determine the proper dosage. It is essential that treatment is continued until the entire prescribed amount has been taken (unless the prescribing doctor tells the patient otherwise), as stopping treatment early can result in a return of symptoms.
Side effects
Flucloxacillin (Flucloxacillin) can sometimes cause:
Tell your doctor if any side effects occur. Serious reactions which require immediate medical care include pseudomembranous colitis, fever and changes in white blood cell levels. Other reactions which urgently require medical attention may also occur. Ask your doctor about this before starting treatment.
Precautions
This medication is normally taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before eating or else 2 hours after a meal.
Colitis can sometimes occur as a result of taking antibiotics. If you notice severe diarrhoea either during treatment or after you finish taking this drug, you must tell your doctor immediately.
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
Always use Flucloxacillin (Flucloxacillin) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:
