Fungotek

Uses
Fungotek (Terbinafine) is an allylamine antifungal used to treat fungal infections affecting the toenails or fingernails. These infections usually occur as a result of a fungus called tinea unguium. When taken, this medication prevents the fungi from producing ergosterol. Without this substance, holes begin to appear in the membranes of the fungi, leading to the eventual destruction of the fungi, thereby treating the infection.

Dosage and Administration
Fungotek (Terbinafine) comes as 250mg tablets. You will need to visit your doctor to determine the correct dosage. Onychomycosis of the fingernail (the medical name for a fungal infection of the fingernail) is usually treated with 250mg, taken once per day for a period of 6 weeks, and onychomycosis of the toenail is generally treated with the same dosage as a fingernail infection, except treatment for 12 weeks may be necessary. Patients should note that the nail may not be completely cured until a few months after treatment. This is because a healthy nail usually takes a few months to grow.

Side effects
Patients should note that Fungotek (Terbinafine) can cause side effects, such as:

• Skin irritation
• Stomach pain
• Muscular pain
• Changes in taste sensation
• An unusual taste in the mouth

While you are being treated with this medicine, it is recommended that you report all side effects to your doctor. If you notice any symptoms of a serious reaction, you must consult your doctor immediately. Examples of this include severe fatigue, appetite loss, behavioural changes, flaking of the skin and changes in skin colour. This is not a complete list of reactions, and you should ask your doctor for more details.

Precautions
You will most likely be directed by your doctor to avoid or limit drinking alcohol during treatment, as alcohol can increase the risk of serious side effects when taken alongside this medicine.

Taking this medicine can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid unnecessary sun exposure and tanning lamps.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Fungotek (Terbinafine) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• If you suffer from any allergies.
• If you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses.
