Uses
Fungotek (Terbinafine) is an allylamine antifungal used to treat fungal infections affecting the toenails or fingernails. These infections usually occur as a result of a fungus called tinea unguium. When taken, this medication prevents the fungi from producing ergosterol. Without this substance, holes begin to appear in the membranes of the fungi, leading to the eventual destruction of the fungi, thereby treating the infection.
Dosage and Administration
Fungotek (Terbinafine) comes as 250mg tablets. You will need to visit your doctor to determine the correct dosage. Onychomycosis of the fingernail (the medical name for a fungal infection of the fingernail) is usually treated with 250mg, taken once per day for a period of 6 weeks, and onychomycosis of the toenail is generally treated with the same dosage as a fingernail infection, except treatment for 12 weeks may be necessary. Patients should note that the nail may not be completely cured until a few months after treatment. This is because a healthy nail usually takes a few months to grow.
