Uses
Lamisil (Terbinafine) is an antifungal medicine, administered in the form of tablets, which is used to treat infections of the fingernails and toenails (onychomycosis) caused by fungi (dermatophytes). This medicine works by destroying the fungi responsible for the infection, allowing the nails to heal. In some cases, these tablets may be prescribed for other uses as deemed necessary by your doctor.
Dosage and Administration
Lamisil (Terbinafine) tablets are taken by mouth. Adults who are treating onychomycosis of the fingernails may be told to take one tablet per day, for a period of 6 weeks, whereas onychomycosis of the toenail requires the same dosage, but treatment is continued for 12 weeks. Patients should note that the optimal results will not be visible for at least a few months after treatment has finished, as a new and healthy nail generally takes some time to grow. Other conditions, such as tinea capitis, cutaneous candidiasis, tinea corporis and tinea cruris may require different dosages and the period of treatment may be considerably shorter.
Side effects
Lamisil (Terbinafine) tablets may cause side effects, such as:
If you notice any side effects, tell your doctor. It is possible that you will be told to discontinue treatment if you experience symptoms of a smell or taste disturbance. There is a slight risk of severe side effects which require immediate medical attention. Consult your doctor immediately if you notice severe peeling or blistering of the skin, flaking of the skin, weight loss, problems related to hearing, signs of a new infection or any other symptoms of a serious reaction.
Precautions
If you suffer from HIV, AIDS, kidney disease, liver disease or lupus, it is necessary to inform your doctor before commencing treatment.
Your doctor may advise you to limit or cease consumption of alcoholic beverages, as alcohol can increase the risk of side effects.
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
Always use Lamisil (Terbinafine) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
