Uses
Glivec (Imatinib Mesylate) belongs to a group of drugs referred to as protein tyrosine kinase inhibitors. It is an anti-cancer medication primarily used as a treatment for leukaemia, however, it may also be used to treat other types of rare cancer, such as GIST (gastrointestinal stromal tumours) and DFSP (dermatofibrosarcoma). This medicine works by inhibiting the action of the abnormal protein (called c-kit) that causes the multiplication and growth of the cancer cells, thereby preventing the spread of the cancer.
Dosage and Administration
Patients undergoing treatment with Glivec (Imatinib Mesylate) must follow the dosage regimen prescribed by their doctor. The tablets are taken with a meal and a full glass of water. Adults treating leukaemia are generally told to take a dose of 400mg or 600mg, once per day. However, patients who have been directed to take 800mg per day are normally instructed to take it as two 400mg doses. In all cases, patients will be told by their doctor how long they need to continue treatment for. Other conditions may require different dosage regimens, and it is essential that all patients strictly follow the instructions provided by their doctor.
