Imatib

Uses
Imatib (Imatinib Mesylate) is used as a cancer treatment. Conditions it may be prescribed for include chronic myeloid leukaemia, acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and other types of blood diseases. It may also be prescribed to treat GIST (gastrointestinal stromal tumours) and a certain type of cancer affecting the skin referred to as DFSP (dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans). This drug is a type of kinase inhibitor, and it works by inhibiting the action of a certain abnormal protein needed by the cancer cells to multiply, resulting in the destruction of the cancer cells.

Dosage and Administration
Imatib (Imatinib Mesylate) is used for various conditions, and because of this, required doses will vary from patient to patient, depending on such factors as the condition being treated and the seriousness of the illness. Chronic myelogenous leukaemia, gastrointestinal stromal tumours, systemic mastocystosis and any other conditions this drug is used for will all require different dosage regimens, and patients must follow any instructions given to them by their doctor.

Side effects
Treatment with Imatib (Imatinib Mesylate) may sometimes cause side effects, such as:

• A reduced appetite
• Feelings of anxiety
• Headaches or fatigue
• Cramps affecting the muscles
• Appetite loss or digestive disturbances

Side effects should be reported to your doctor. It is important to be aware of the risk of serious side effects that may occur during treatment with this medicine. Medical attention will be needed right away if you notice increased nighttime urination, coughing up blood, an increase in weight, inflammation of the limbs, bloody stools or any other symptoms of a serious reaction.

Precautions
Your doctor may tell you to weigh yourself at regular intervals, and if any rapid weight increases occur, medical attention should be sought straight away.

Do not drive or operate machinery if you become dizzy.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
