Uses
Glivec (Imatinib Mesylate) is a drug which is prescribed to treat leukaemia and certain cancers affecting the stomach. More specifically, it can treat a type of cancer called Philadelphia chromosome positive chronic myeloid leukaemia, as well as Philadelphia chromosome positive acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Other conditions treated include hypereosinophillic syndrome, chronic eosinophilic leukaemia, dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans and gastrointestinal stromal tumours. This drug works by interfering with the growth of the cancer cells.
Dosage and Administration
The exact dosage required for patients taking Glivec (Imatinib Mesylate) can vary, depending on the type of cancer being treated. This medicine comes in the form of tablets, which are taken with food and a glass of water. Treatment of unresectable/metastatic, malignant gastrointestinal stromal tumours may require a dose of 400mg per day. If signs of disease progression are noticed, the patient may have their dose increased, and a dose of up to 800mg per day may be prescribed (administered as two 400mg doses). Other conditions, such as leukaemia, may require different doses, and it is essential that all patients strictly adhere to the dosage regimen prescribed by their doctor.
