Uses
Klacid-MR (Clarithromycin) belongs to a group of medicines called macrolide antibiotics. Physicians prescribe it for treating pneumonia, bronchitis, as well as other types of bacterial infections, such as those affecting the skin, ears, sinuses and elsewhere in the body. Patients with HIV may be given this drug as a treatment or preventative measure for a type of lung infection called mycobacterium avium complex (MAC), and it is often used together with other drugs to eliminate a type of bacteria called helicobacter pylori, which can cause stomach ulcers. However, this drug will not treat viral infections.

Doctors may prescribe this medication to treat pneumonia, bronchitis, as well as bacterial infections of the ears, sinuses, skin or soft tissue. Other uses include treating Lyme disease, eliminating a type of bacteria called helicobacter pylori in patients with ulcers, and treating MAC (mycobacterium avium complex) infections in HIV patients.

Dosage and Administration
You must consult your doctor for a medical assessment, to determine whether or not Klacid-MR (Clarithromycin) is suitable for your infection. If your doctor decides to prescribe it for you, he or she will tell you how much to take, as well as how long you need to continue treatment for. Adults treating an acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis may be told to take 500mg by mouth, every 12 hours, with treatment continuing for a period of 7 to 14 days. However, the dosage prescribed depends on the type of bacteria responsible for the infection, and in some cases, adults treating bronchitis may be treated with 250mg, taken every 12 hours, for 7 to 14 days. Only take the amount of medicine prescribed by your doctor, and continue treatment until you have finished the entire prescribed amount (unless directed otherwise by your doctor.

Side effects
Klacid-MR (Clarithromycin) may cause:

  • Headache
  • Indigestion
  • Discoloured teeth
  • Vaginal irritation
  • Altered taste sensation

Tell your doctor if you feel unwell. In rare cases, serious side effects which require immediate medical attention may occur. Examples of this include blistering of the skin, fever, appetite loss, discoloured urine, muscle weakness and other severe reactions which have not been listed here.

Precautions
Colitis (bowel inflammation) may sometimes occur as a result of taking antibiotics. If you notice severe diarrhoea, either during or after treatment, you should consult your doctor immediately.

In some cases, taking antibiotic medication may result in other types of infection (such as fungal infections), and these infections cannot be treated with antibiotics. Therefore, you should tell your doctor if you notice any signs of a new infection.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Klacid-MR (Clarithromycin) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:
