Uses
Maxalt Melt (Rizatriptan Benzoate) is a triptan which is indicated for the treatment of acute migraine attacks in cases of clear diagnosis by a doctor. Its mechanism of action may be due to it working as an agonist of the 5-HT (serotonin) receptors. Many doctors have theorized that migraine headaches are causes by cranial vasodilation (the widening of blood vessels) and the release of certain substances from the nerve endings. By activating the serotonin receptors in the intracranial blood vessels, it helps to constrict these blood vessels, thereby reversing the symptoms of a migraine attack.
Dosage and Administration
Maxalt Melt (Rizatriptan Benzoate) is provided as 10mg strength soluble wafers. Your doctor will inform you how much to take. These wafers do not need to be taken with water. Ensure that both of your hands are dry, and put the wafer onto the surface of the tongue, where it will be dissolved. Doctors normally tell patients treating acute migraine attacks to take a single 10mg wafer. Should the first wafer help with your, call or visit your doctor. You may be told to take a second one 2 hours following the first one. However, if the first one does not work, your doctor will tell you not to take the second one. Never exceed the maximum dosage.
