Uses
Sandomigran (Pizotifen Malate) is used for the prophylaxis (prevention) of migraine headaches and attacks. It works by acting on the blood vessels and serotonin receptors in the brain. The active ingredient in this drug is known as a serotonin antagonist and after administration, it inhibits the 5HT (serotonin) receptors which are found inside the brain. This in turn blocks the dilation of the blood vessels (which is believed to play a part in causing migraines).
Serotonin can also cause other chemicals to be released which can contribute to this widening of the blood vessels in the brain. It also has anticholinergic and antihistamine benefits. Medical studies have shown that treatment with this medicine can decrease the frequency at which headaches occur. Headaches that do occur may also be less severe in nature. Other types of vascular headaches have also been treated with this medicine, such as vasomotor headaches and cluster headaches.
