Uses
Melanorm-HC Cream (Hydroquinone Acetate/Tretinoin/Hydrocortisone) treats hyperpigmentation of the skin by suppressing the production of pigments. It can also mitigate wrinkles and rough skin. This topical skin cream is produced using a combination of 3 active ingredients, each with their own unique mechanism of action. Hydroquinone is a type of organic compound frequently used as a bleaching agent in skin care products.
When applied topically, it can prevent the synthesis of melanin (the pigment that gives skin its dark colour). This results in a reversible lightening effect on the skin, however further exposure to the sun will result in the treated areas becoming dark again. Tretinoin is a form of vitamin A which has been widely used for acne or keratosis pilaris, due to its emollient effects. Dermatologists have frequently used it alongside other topical treatments to treat fine wrinkles (but not deep ones), rough skin, irregular or patchy skin colour (often called mottled hyperpigmentation).
It may work by activating the retinoic acid receptors in the skin and stimulating the growth of cells. Hydrocortisone is a topical corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory properties. This combination of ingredients complements each other, and are useful in the treatment of freckles, melasma, chloasma or any other undesirable melanin pigmentation. A medical trial was also conducted to evaluate its treatment in melasma and its effects on depigmentation and collagen synthesis.
Dosage and Administration
Melanorm-HC Cream (Hydroquinone Acetate/Tretinoin/Hydrocortisone) is only for topical use on the face. Before you apply it, your doctor or dermatologist may direct you to wash the face using a mild cleanser. Allow the skin to dry, and wait for 20 to 30 minutes after washing before you apply it. A very small amount of cream is all that is required, as excess application could lead to serious skin reactions. In all cases, your doctor will provide you with detailed instructions related to how much cream to apply.
Side effects
Treatment of hyperpigmented skin with Melanorm-HC Cream (Hydroquinone Acetate/Tretinoin/Hydrocortisone) could cause patients to experience side effects, some of which will be noticeable at the application cite. Examples include:
Inform your doctor or dermatologist if your skin appears to suffer from a reaction or if you notice any side effects. Patients who suffer from severe skin pain and irritation, blisters, peeling or any other serious reactions will need immediate medical attention.
Precautions
A condition called exogenous ochronsis can occur in some cases. Symptoms include discolouration of the skin, causing it to turn blue or black. See your doctor immediately if this happens.
The cream should not be allowed to get in the eyes, mouth or nose, as these areas are extremely sensitive to the cream, and irritation could occur. It should also never be ingested.
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
Always use Melanorm-HC Cream (Hydroquinone Acetate/Tretinoin/Hydrocortisone) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
