Uses
Norvasc (Amlodipine Besylate) is a calcium channel blocker, which is used to lower high blood pressure. In addition to this, it may be prescribed to control angina. This drug works by acting on the calcium channels in the muscle cells, resulting in the relaxation of the muscles and the widening of the arteries. As a result of this, the blood pressure is decreased, and the supply of oxygen to the heart is improved (which helps to prevent angina attacks).

Dosage and Administration
Patients who are being treated with Norvasc (Amlodipine Besylate) tablets must carefully follow all dosage instructions given by their doctor. Treatment of hypertension often requires an initial dosage of 5mg, taken once per day. The prescribing doctor may decide to adjust this dosage. In most cases, the maintenance dose ranges from 5mg to 10mg once per day. Angina is usually treated with 5mg to 10mg, with one dose taken every day. However, the exact dosage will vary for each patient, and the prescribing doctor's instructions must be followed.

Side effects
Treatment with Norvasc (Amlodipine Besylate) may cause side effects, such as:

• Sleepiness
• Changes in mood
• Spinning sensation
• Altered sense of taste
• Fluid retention resulting in inflammation

Other reactions include loss of hair, impotence, frequent urination, a ringing noise in the ears, peripheral neuropathy and other conditions which have not been mentioned here. If you notice any severe side effects, you should immediately seek medical attention.

Precautions
This medication is not to be used for treating a sudden angina attack, as it is not rapidly working. Ask your doctor what to do in case this occurs.

Regular monitoring of your blood pressure is necessary while this medication is being taken.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
