Uses
Progynova (Estradiol Valerate) (formerly spelled as oestradiol valerate) is indicated for the treatment of the menopause. It is an oestrogen hormone that works by supplementing the body`s hormonal levels, which can be decreased due to the menopause. This form of treatment is called hormone replacement therapy (commonly abbreviated to HRT), and is generally used on a short term basis to relive vaginal burning, dryness and itching caused by the menopause.
Other menopausal symptoms it relieves include mood changes, sleep problems, hot flashes, night sweats and mucocutaneous involution. These distressing symptoms are triggered due to the progressive decline of oestradiol production by the ovaries, which is a primary characteristic of the menopause. The active ingredient in this product is an ester of oestrogen, which can reverse these menopausal symptoms by replenishing the body`s hormones. It may even slow down bone loss caused by the menopause, however it is not used as a first line treatment for osteoporosis.
In women who have not had a hysterectomy, it may cause excessive growth of the uterine lining (in the womb). Doctors may recommend the use of a progestogen so as to prevent endometrial growth (which could lead to endometrial cancer if left untreated). Use of a progestogen in combination with oestrogen replacement (referred to as combined HRT) has yet to be proven to interfere with the ability of oestrogen to work as indicated. Ask your doctor for more details.
