Uses
Singulair (Montelukast Sodium) is used for control and maintenance of asthma symptoms. It may also be administered for seasonal allergies, allergic rhinitis (nasal congestion and other symptoms caused by an allergic reaction) or urticaria. Some people have taken it to prevent exercised induced asthma or bronchospasm. However, it is not considered suitable as a treatment for asthma attacks. The active component in this drug is known as a leukotriene inhibitor or modifier. There are types of chemicals which the body releases from the mast cells and eosinophils, especially in asthmatic patients.
These are known as leukotrienes and can trigger muscular contractions in the smooth muscles of the bronchioles, resulting in tightening of the air passages which can cause the breathing difficulties associated with asthma. They can also cause swelling of the nasal passages and excess mucous production, resulting in rhinitis. When administered, the active component in this drug inhibits the receptors in the lungs that leukotrienes act on, thereby blocking their action. As a result of this, symptoms such as the narrowing of the airways and the overproduction of mucous may be prevented, and it may even help prevent exercise induced bronchospasms.
Dosage and Administration
Singulair (Montelukast Sodium) comes as 10mg tablets which are meant for oral administration. The dosage will differ for each patient, based on their medical history. In some cases, the dosage for adults that doctors prescribe is 10mg (equal to one tablet) per day. If used to prevent EIB (exercised induced bronchoconstriction), there is a possibility that the patient may be told to take a single dose of 10mg at least 2 hours prior to exercising.
However, if the patient is taking the medicine on a daily basis, another dosage should not be taken to prevent bronchospasms cause by exercise. It is important to note that the dosage requirements for each patient can differ and it is necessary to strictly adhere to the dosage instructions given by your doctor. Never take more than your doctor tells you to take.
Side effects
Use of Singulair (Montelukast Sodium) may sometimes result in side effects, such as:
You are advised to inform your doctor if any side effects occur. Patients should note that infrequent occurrences of significantly dangerous reactions are possible. Immediate medical care will be necessary if this happens. Examples include tremors, behavioural changes, asthma symptoms which are worse than before, pain in the sinuses, fever and other reactions which have not been listed here.
Precautions
These tablets are not used to provide quick relief from a rapid onset of asthma symptoms (asthma attack). If your doctor prescribes a reliever (a type of inhaler used to provide rapid relief from a sudden asthma attack), you will need to continue to keep this with you and use it as directed by your doctor.
Prior to the commencement of treatment, you must tell your doctor if you are affected by liver disease or have a history of this condition.
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
Always use Singulair (Montelukast Sodium) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
