Uses
Sporanox (Itraconazole) is an antifungal medicine that is commonly used as a treatment for toenail fungus and fingernail fungus. In addition to this, it may be prescribed to patients affected by other fungal infections, (such as ringworm, jock itch and athlete's foot). The primary ingredient in this medication belongs to a class of medicines referred to as triazole antifungals, and it targets the fungi responsible for the infection, leading to the eventual treatment of symptoms.
Dosage and Administration
Patients need to visit their doctor before taking Sporanox (Itraconazole), so that the proper dosage can be determined and prescribed. These capsules must be taken after eating a full meal. Adults treating onychomycosis (nail infection) are sometimes told to take 200mg per day for a period of 3 months. However, in some cases, pulse therapy may be prescribed. This involves taking 200mg per day for one week. Patients treating a fingernail infection may need 2 pulse treatments, whereas toenail infections generally require 3 pulse treatments. There is always a medication free 3 week gap in between pulse treatments. Your doctor will provide you with specific dosage instructions which you must follow.
