Uses
Topirol (Topiramate) is used for its anticonvulsant properties to treat epilepsy, and studies have also shown that it could possibly be useful in helping people lose weight or lowering the urge to consume food in those with binge eating disorder. It is also used to prevent migraine headaches (but not to treat a migraine headache that has already occurred).
This medicine acts in 3 different ways to stop seizures in epileptic patients, including causing an enhancement of GABA (a neurotransmitter in the brain that can help to calm nerve activity), preventing any sodium from building up in the nerve cells and reducing glutamate's ability to cause nerve cell excitement. Other conditions for which doctors have used this drug include bipolar disorder and alcoholism.
Dosage and Administration
Patients who are being treated with Topirol (Topiramate) should note that the right amount of medicine will be decided by the doctor providing medical treatment, based on the particular condition that is being treated. The dosage for seizures is different than the dosage for weight loss, and patients taking this medicine for migraine prevention will also need to take a different amount than other patients. These tablets contain 100mg of the active ingredient, and are taken orally.
