Uses
Zonimid 25 (Zonisamide) is given in combination with other medicines to treat partial seizures in patients with epilepsy. It acts on neurotransmitters in the brain such as GABA and also helps to stop unusual electrical brain activity. Many prominent medical researchers have studied this drug, and it may have potential benefits if used for migraine prevention, neuropathic pain and bipolar depression. In addition to this, there may also be further benefits as a weight loss treatment.
Dosage and Administration
If your doctor has told you to use Zonimid 25 (Zonisamide) as a treatment for epilepsy, ensure that all dosage instructions given to you are strictly complied with for the entire duration of treatment. This medicine comes as 25mg capsules, and the correct dosage will be decided by a doctor. Some adults who are being given this medicine as an adjunct to other medicines for the treatment of partial seizures may be told to start out with an initial dosage of 100mg per day.
Two weeks later, the dosage may be increased to 200mg per day (100mg twice per day), either as one dose or two separate doses. Following this, the doctor may decide to increase the dosage to 300mg per day and then 400mg per day (as one single or two divided doses), and during this time, the doctor will allow the dose to be stable for a period of at least two weeks in order to achieve a steady state. However, some doctors may prefer to allow the dosage to remain at a low level so as to better assess the patient's response to treatment.
