Uses
Lamictal Dc (Lamotrigine) belongs to a group of drugs called anticonvulsants. It is also referred to as an antiepileptic medication. Seizures are caused by a release of rapid electrical signals in the brain, which disrupts the normal functioning of the brain. This drug helps to prevent this abnormal brain activity by preventing a build up of sodium in the nerve cells. Preventing this build up helps to stabilise brain activity.

Another benefit of this drug is that it prevents glutamate (a type of neurotransmitter) from being released in the brain. As glutamate is believed to be a major contributing factor to seizures, reducing the amount of it released can also normalise brain activity. Doctors also prescribe this medicine as a treatment for bipolar disorder.

Dosage and Administration
Lamictal Dc (Lamotrigine) is either used on its own, or in combination with other drugs. The exact dosage required can vary greatly, and a specific dosage regimen will need to be prescribed by your doctor, which will vary for each individual patient, depending on what other medications are being used. Therefore, a medical assessment is required before starting treatment, so that your doctor can properly determine the correct dosage. This drug comes as 5mg tablets, and most patients who take this drug are started out on a low dosage, which is adjusted by the prescribing doctor. Follow all instructions given to you, and never exceed the prescribed dosage.

Side effects
Possible side effects of Lamictal Dc (Lamotrigine) include:

• Drowsiness
• Uncontrolled eye movements
• Vaginal irritation or itching
• A decrease in appetite and weight loss
• Problems related to speaking, thinking ability and concentration

Side effects should be reported to your doctor. Severe reactions are rare, but still possible. You must immediately see your doctor if you notice light sensitivity, a stiff neck, an increase in seizures or a worsening of bipolar disorder, pale skin, bruising or any other signs of a severe reaction.

Precautions
In rare cases, serious and possible life threatening rashes on the skin have occurred in patients treated with this drug. The risk of this is greatest if treatment is started with a dosage that is too high, if the dosage is increased too quickly or if the drug is taken with other medicines. Ask your doctor about the risk of this before starting treatment.

You are advised not to suddenly discontinue taking this drug, as doing so may cause you to experience worse seizures. Consult your doctor, as your dosage may need to be gradually decreased. If you stop treatment, your doctor will start you out on a low dosage again if a recommencement of treatment is deemed necessary.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
