Uses
Lipitor (Atorvastatin Calcium) is used as a treatment for hypercholesterolaemia, hyperlipidaemia and other related conditions when exercise and diet alone are insufficient at controlling cholesterol levels. In addition to this, patients at risk of heart attacks or strokes, such as those with heart disease, diabetes or high blood pressure may be directed to take this medicine to reduce cholesterol levels. The primary ingredient in this medication belongs to a group of drugs called statins, and it works by reducing triglyceride and LDL (bad cholesterol) levels, while also increasing the levels of HDL (good cholesterol).
Dosage and Administration
Your doctor will tell you the correct amount of Lipitor (Atorvastatin Calcium) to take. Adults who have been told to take this medication to prevent cardiovascular disease are usually prescribed an initial dose which can range from 10mg to 80mg per day. Adjustments to the dosage regimen may be made at 2 to 4 week intervals at the doctor's discretion. Hyperlipidaemia generally requires an initial dosage of either 10mg, 20mg or 40mg taken once per day. In most cases, the maintenance dose ranges from 10mg to 80mg, taken once per day. Always follow your doctor's instructions.

Patients should note that it is necessary to inform the prescribing doctor if there is a history of kidney disease, liver disease or alcohol use (especially heavy alcohol abuse).
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
