Helping with the reduction of cholesterol levels | Colestid Hydrochloride | Colestid Granule |
Uses
Colestid Granule (Colestid Hydrochloride) functions as a lipid lowering agent, and belongs to a class of medicines referred to as bile acid sequestrants. Patients using this medicine to reduce blood levels of cholesterol may also need to make changes in their diet (to help with weight loss) and exercise regularly, so as to lessen the risks of serious health problems caused by cholesterol.
This medicine is different than other cholesterol lowering medicines, as the bloodstream does not absorb it. Instead, it passes through the intestines, and forms a bond with the bile acids, resulting in these acids being passed out as faeces instead of being absorbed by the bloodstream. As a result of this, more bile acids are produced by the liver, using the cholesterol present in the blood, thereby resulting in decreased cholesterol levels.
Dosage and Administration
Colestid Granule (Colestid Hydrochloride) is not meant to be administered as a dry powder. It is necessary to mix the medicine with a drink or liquid food. Patients must mix it with 100ml of water, skimmed milk or other types of still drinks. As an alternative to this, it may be taken in cereal or soup. Only take the amount of medicine that your doctor tells you to take. Adult patients are sometimes instructed to start out treatment with 1 to 2 sachets per day. Some doctors may adjust the dosage on a monthly basis until satisfactory changes in cholesterol levels are achieved. However, patients should not change their dosage unless following the instructions of their doctor.
