Uses
Risperdal (Risperidone) is prescribed as a treatment for episodes of mania and mixed episodes (mania and depression occurring simultaneously) in patients affected by bipolar disorder (manic depression). It is also used to treat symptoms of schizophrenia, such as disturbed thoughts, hallucinations and social withdrawal. Another use for this drug is treating aggressive behaviour in certain patients affected by autism. The active ingredient in this medication is in a class of drugs called atypical antipsychotics, and it works by altering the effects of certain natural chemicals in the brain.
Dosage and Administration
Risperdal (Risperidone) comes as tablets, which are taken by mouth. Your doctor will tell you the correct amount to take, and you must strictly follow his or her instructions. Adults treating schizophrenia are often directed to take an initial dose of 1mg, twice per day. On day 2 of treatment, the dosage may be increased. Following this, the prescribing doctor may decide to adjust the dosage (at weekly intervals), however, this is dependent on the patient's response to treatment, and may not be necessary in all cases. The maximum dose is generally 16mg per day.
Side effects

Precautions
Taking this medicine can make it more difficult for your body to cool down if it becomes hot, or to become warm again when cold. You should inform your doctor if you believe that you may be exposed to hot or cold temperatures, or if you plan on exercising.
In rare cases, treatment with this drug may cause an increase in blood sugar levels, which may lead to diabetes (or worsen it if the patient is already affected by diabetes). Ask your doctor about all the risks associated with this drug before you start treatment.
Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
Always use Risperdal (Risperidone) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.
