Uses
Amlip (Amlodipine Besilate) relieves high blood pressure and can also treat various forms of angina. It works by inhibiting the effects of calcium ions on certain muscle cells so as to widen the arteries. This medicine is referred to as a calcium channel blocker, however it can also function as a vasodilator. When used for hypertension, it is believed to prevent calcium from moving into the cells of the vascular smooth muscle (which occurs on the wall of the arteries) and cardiac muscles. This is achieved by blocking the ion channels that the calcium moves through.
As a result of this, the contraction of the muscles in the arteries is prevented, allowing the blood to flow more freely through wider vessels. Reducing resistance within the arteries subsequently leads to lower blood pressure. Its mechanism of action for preventing angina attacks caused by exercise involves lowering the afterload of the heart and reducing its oxygen demand when exercising. Patients affected by Prinzmetal's angina (which does not occur due to physical stress) have been treated with it. This medicine has also been used to lower the risk of hospitalisation in certain patients who have coronary artery disease.
Dosage and Administration
Amlip (Amlodipine Besilate) tablets contain 10mg of the active ingredient and are administered by mouth. The most commonly prescribed dosage that adult patients are told to take by their doctors is 5mg per day at the start of treatment, and 5mg to 10mg per day for maintenance treatment. Some patients may be told to start with 2.5mg per day. Doctors may need to take certain factors into consideration when deciding on the correct dosage for patients with angina or coronary artery disease. This medicine can be taken alongside meals or without food.
